5 DIY Mother’s Day Gifts

Mother’s Day is just days away and I’m sure there are tons of people still frantically trying to order their mom flowers or candies or shopping for the usual gifts of perfume, pjs, and jewelry. Why give your mom something that she gets every year? Something that all of her friends get? The normal Mother’s Day gifts? Why not do something special for your mom? Doesn’t she deserve it? Sure she does!

Making a handmade gift will surely be something special that will always be treasured. As a mother of young kids, I know that I love the gifts and cards that are made by their little hands much more than anything that could be bought.

There are so many options of things to make for Mother’s Day. Handmade signs, special pictures in a nice frame, coupon booklets. Why not get the kids involved in grandma’s gift? She’s sure to love something they make so much more than anything you could buy her at a store.

Mother’s Day Gift Ideas

The best gifts that my kids and I have ever made for Mother’s Day were things that they my mother and grandmother could use to pamper themselves with. So far the biggest hits we’ve made have been body butter, sugar scrub, bath salts, shower gels, and essential oil rollers.

Body Butters

Body Butters are moisturizers that are heavier, thicker, more emollient, and have a more luxurious feel. They often contain ingredients such as shea butter or natural oils that coat the skin and create a barrier to seal in the moisture and protect the skin. Lotions are different from body butters and are often much more difficult to make at home. They are lighter, have lower oil content, and are not lubricating. It has a non-greasy feel and quickly absorbs into the skin.

Vanilla Almond Body Butter

Ingredients:

1 c cocoa butter (grated)

1/4 c coconut oil

1/4 tsp vanilla

1/2 c almond oil

Directions:

Melt the cocoa butter and coconut oil in a double boiler. When melted completely add the almond oil and vanilla. Chill until slightly hardened, about 20 minutes. With a hand mixer whip it until it is creamy and smooth. Spoon into a mason jar and seal tightly. (As it sits it will harden a bit more. Scoop some out and rub hands together. The heat from your hands will make it soften and become easy to rub into the skin.)

Variations:

Making the fragrance different is simple. Choose your favorite essential oil and replace the vanilla. Use 5-20 drops of essential oil, depending on how strong you want the fragrance. You can also mix essential oils such as lemon and lime, different citrus like grapefruit and orange, or chamomile and lavender to make a calming blend.

Sugar Scrubs

Sugar scrubs are exfoliating body treatments that are more gentle than salt scrubs. They remove the outer layer of dead and dry skin, hydrate, and soften the skin.

Variations:

Sweet Orange Sugar Scrub

1 c brown sugar

1/4 c olive oil

7-8 drops of orange essential oil

Vanilla Lavender

1 c white sugar

1/4 c olive oil

1 tsp vanilla extract

5 drops of lavender essential oil

(These are my favorites, but you can substitute the essential oils in any of these or add essential oils to the honey/brown sugar.)

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Mix together well making sure the essential oils are distributed throughout all of the sugar. Spoon into a mason jar and seal tightly.

Rub onto skin to remove dead and dry skin before showering. Wash off in the shower and apply body butter after towelling dry. (This combination of the scrub and body butter will make your skin extra smooth and moisturized.)

Bath Salts

Bath salts are colored crystals that perfume and soften bath water. They can improve cleaning, serve as cosmetic agents, and enhance the pleasure of baths.

Sleepy Time

Promotes sleep, relaxes muscles, and boosts immunity.

1 c Epsom salt

1/2 c coarse sea salt

7-8 drops lavender essential oil

1/4 c crushed lavender (optional)

1 T coconut oil

(Optional-add 1/2 c baking soda to make the bath fizzy and to remove toxins. Add a few drops of food coloring to make it prettier if desired.)

Directions:

Crush lavender like crushing spices. Mix Epsom salt, salt, and crushed lavender. Mix together. Add the lavender essential oil and mix throughout the salts. Spoon into mason jar and seal tightly.

Fill a tub with warm water and add 1/2 c salt mixture. Also add 1 T coconut oil. (Apple cider vinegar can also be added to aid in immunity boosting.) Relax for at least 30 minutes.

Roll on skin as needed.

*Tip: Using the roller on the feet is the best because the feet absorb the oils more than any part of the body and faster.

**For pain, muscle rub, or headache apply to the area of the body where needed; headache on the temples, pain/muscle where you are having pains.

(Make sure to research the essential oils you are going to be using. Not all oils are made the same therefore the quality of different brands varies. I use döTerra brand oils.)

Final Steps

After sealing your jars or rollers make sure to label them. Use decorative printable labels to make the gifts look nicer. You can also cover the mason jar lid with card stock to make it look nice. Adding a ribbon and bow around the top is also a nice touch.

Mother’s Day is a special day for us as moms. No, we generally don’t get the day off, we don’t get to just sit around and do nothing. But we do get to feel even more special on this day. Mostly because our families show us how much they love us but also because we get special gifts just for us (like stuff that nobody else really wants or will use). Make the special mother in your life one (or all) of these amazing handmade gifts and she will feel even more like the queen of the day.
